levertraan

Dutch

Etymology

Compound of lever (liver) + traan (fish oil).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈleː.vərˌtraːn/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: le‧ver‧traan

Noun

levertraan m or f (uncountable)

  1. cod liver oil

Usage notes

  • There is a widespread misconception in Belgium and the Netherlands that levertraan is actually made from whale livers, affecting use of the term. (Compare the same in German Lebertran.) When stating that one uses levertraan it may therefore be advised to clarify it does not contain whale livers, as whaling is unpopular in both countries.

Descendants

  • Afrikaans: lewertraan
  • Japanese: 肝油 (calque)
  • West Frisian: levertraan
