From Proto-Balto-Slavic *leiˀstei, ultimately possibly from Proto-Indo-European *léyd-ti ~ lid-énti, an athematic root present from the root *leyd- (“to let, allow”).[1] Cognate with Latvian laist (“let, allow”).
