From Old Galician-Portuguese, from a Vulgar Latin *glirionem or *glērionem, probably from Latin glīs, glīris, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gl̥h₁éys (“weasel, mouse”). Compare the related forms lirio, liranco, leiranco. Compare Spanish lirón, Catalan liró, French liron.
