From Old High German lāo (“warm”), from Proto-Germanic *hlēwaz (“lukewarm”). Cognate with German lau (“lukewarm”), obsolete English lew (“sunny, warm”), Dutch lauw (“lukewarm”), Icelandic hlýr (“warm”).
