Uncertain. Several etymologies have been proposed:

  1. Inherited from Sanskrit अच्छ (accha), with a "l-" prothesis, thus, being a cognate of Hindi अच्छा (acchā).[1][2]
  2. Inherited from Sanskrit लक्ष्मक (lakṣmaka),[2][3] लक्ष्मी (lakṣmī).[2] Compare also लक्षित (lakṣita).[2]
