Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *lēˀtas, from Proto-Indo-European *leh₁-tos, from the root Proto-Indo-European *leh₁- (slow). Cognate with Latvian lēts (inexpensive; (archaic) light, easy) and probably Proto-Slavic *lěto (summer) (presumably, originally “mild, calm weather”).
