löja
Swedish
Etymology
Cognate of Norwegian laue, løya, løje, Danish løjer. Doublet of låga. See also Ancient Greek λευκός (leukós) as the name of a holy fish attested in the ode to Berenice by Theocritus ().
The name is due to the silvery flashes from the sides of the fish at its turns in the water. Compare etymologies for braxen and id.
