Etymology
Related to knaka. Merged with obsolete strong verb knäcka (with past tense knack), which was used in intransitive sense, while the weak conjugation was originally only used for transitive sense. These two forms in Swedish and Danish has same infinitive (see Danish knække), in difference to Norwegian Nynorsk knekkja and knekka, while not used in insular Scandinavian languages at all. Compare also German knacken of the same origin.
