Etymology

Uncertain, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut”), either inherited or borrowed from an Iranian language. If so, cognate with English sharp, Sanskrit कृति (kṛti, “knife, dagger”), and an impressive array of other IE words. Also, doublet of kärst- (“to cut, chop”).
