Either from Proto-Philippine *kataŋ, or cognate to Malay ketam, which came from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kt₁aːm (“crab”) (c.f. Khmer ក្ដាម (kdaam), Vietnamese đam, Mon ဂတာံ (hətam)).
