Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek καλλιγράφος (kalligráphos, “calligrapher”), from κάλλος (kállos, “beauty”) and γράφω (gráphō, “to draw”), made into a first-declension masculine noun (ending -s).
