Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *kaima (compare Estonian kaim, Proto-Samic *kuojmē), borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Lithuanian káimas, Latvian ciems). Northern Sami gaiˈbmât (to adapt to a companion, to enjoy company), from Proto-Samic *kājmē, is a later borrowing from Finnic.
