From Middle Dutch cabelliau, from Old Dutch cabillau, possibly from Latin baculum (“stick, staff”), referring to the way cod were split and dried on wooden sticks. Or, with metathesis from/influenced by Basque bakailao (“cod”), Portuguese bacalhau (“cod”).
