Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كانون ثانی (kanun-ı sani), from Arabic كَانُون الثَانِي (kānūn aṯ-ṯānī); equivalent to kânun + sani (second). The name was officially changed to Ocak by law number 4696 passed January 10, 1945.
