First attested in 1690. Formerly ‘tillage, land prepared for plowing’, from Old French gaschiere, gaskiere, from Gaulish *gansco (“branch”) (compare Old Irish gesca); from Proto-Indo-European *kak-.

Akin to Spanish and Portuguese gancho (“hook”).
