From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s/g-ljak (“to lick; tongue”). Cognate with Burmese လျက် (lyak, “lick”), Tibetan ལྡག་པ (ldag pa, “lick”), Old Chinese 舐 (OC *ɦljeʔ), Nuosu ꑽ (yot, “lick”). Compare with Lhao Vo yo, , Zaiwa yoq and Hpon zòʔ. Etymologically related to ʃa⁵⁵ (“tongue”).
