From jätte (“giant”). Compare Norwegian Bokmål kjempe-, Norwegian Nynorsk kjempe-, Danish kæmpe-, Dutch reuze- and German riesen-, all deriving from their respective word for ”giant”.
Usage notes
Can be put before virtually any adjective and adverb, and many nouns as well.
