From Old Swedish iærtekn, iærtighne. Uncertain origin. The first half of compound probably from Proto-Germanic *erknaz and related to Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌺𐌽𐍃 (airkns) and Middle High German erchan. Cognate of Icelandic jarteikn, Danish jærtegn.
