Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruba *ʊ̀-kpã, *ʊ-kpã, from Proto-Edekiri *ʊ̀-kpã, *ʊ-kpã. Compare with Ifè ìkpɔ̃, Olukumi ukpan, Itsekiri ukpasun, and possibly Igala ùkpọ̀rọ̀. Likely equivalent to i- (“nominalizing prefix”) + pọn (“to scoop or fetch a liquid”).
