Inherited from Old Spanish aymant, apocopic form of aymante (lodestone), from Old French aïmant (lodestone), from Vulgar Latin *adimas, from Latin adamās (very hard steel; adamant; diamond), ultimately from Ancient Greek ἀδάμας (adámas), with the same meaning. Reinforced or reintroduced by modern French aimant (magnet). Cognate with English diamond. Doublet of diamante.
