hydroperitoneum (uncountable)

1. (medicine, obsolete) The accumulation of fluid in the peritoneum
   • 1848, John Bell, Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic‎, volume 2, page 425:

     If uniformity could be preserved throughout, we ought, however, to say hydroperitoneum, in place of ascites, hydropneumonia, for edema of the lungs, hydroarachnoid, for hydrocephalus, hydropleura, for hydrothorax, and hydrovarium, for dropsy of the ovaries.

   • 1906, Sir John Bland-Sutton, The Diseases of women‎, page 380:

     In the greater proportion of cases hydroperitoneum causes no difficulty.

   • 1922, International Record of Medicine and General Practice Clinics‎:

     There were fourteen cases of primary ovarian cancer, most of them associated with hydroperitoneum.
