hverdag

Danish

Etymology

Compound of hver (every) + dag (day), from Old Norse hverr (every) dagr (day). Semantic shift of uncertain origin. Probably, from the original meaning "every day which is not a holy day". Plausibly under the influence of similar-sounding German "Werktag". Cognate with Swedish vardag and Norwegian Nynorsk kvardag, both with the same meaning.
