Etymology
Inherited from Middle French hoqueter, *icqueter, probably of Germanic origin, ultimately onomatopoeic. Compare Old Norse hixta (“to hiccup”), Middle High German heschezen, heschitzen (“to gulp, burp, sob”), Middle Dutch hicken (“to hiccup”), obsolete English hicket, hyckock (“hiccup”). More at hiccup.
