Possibly borrowed from Old French gaschier, gacher, gasser (to soil, spoil, waste) and gaschier, guaschier, waschier (to wash, soak), both from Frankish *waskan, *wascōn (to wash, bathe), from Proto-Germanic *waskaną (to wash), from Proto-Indo-European *wod- (wet). Alternatively, from guazzo, guazza.
