From Proto-Albanian *griś-, from Proto-Indo-European *gwer-s- (“to raise one’s voice, lift up a cry; set up a clamour”), from *gʷerH-. Cognate to Lithuanian gar̃sas (“call, sound”). Also compare Old English gröetan (“assail, greet”), Old High German gruozen (“weeping, cry”).[1]
