From Middle English grapsen, unmetathesised version of graspen (“to grasp”), from Old English *grǣpsian. Compare to it's equally unmetathesised cognates German Low German grapsen (“to grab; grasp”), German grapsen, Saterland Frisian Grapse (“double handful”).
