From Middle High German grübelen, from Old High German grubilōn (to dig (repeatedly)), from graban (to dig) + -lōn (frequentative suffix), equivalent to graaban + -alan. Cognate with German grübeln (to brood, ponder), also English grub (to scrounge, scavenge).
