Etymology

From god + fearing, likely an alteration of Middle English goddfrihti (god-fearing, literally god-frighty) and god-friht (god-fearing) (whence modern English god-fright), from Old English godfyrht (god-fearing). Compare Old High German gotforht (god-fearing).
