From Ottoman Turkish كیزلمك (gizlemek, to hide, conceal, secrete), derived from Proto-Turkic *kīŕ (a kind of box).[1] The original meaning must have meant “to put in a box or bag, to store”.[2] Compare also gizli (hidden, concealed), derived from the same root.
