Etymology

From Proto-Norse *ᚷᚨᛊᛏᛁᛉ (*gastiʀ) (attested in several name compounds), from Proto-Germanic *gastiz, whence come also Old English ġiest, Old High German gast. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstis.
