gamberger
French
Etymology
Apparently from *comperger, a slang form of compter (“to count, to reckon”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ɡɑ̃.bɛʁ.ʒe/
(file)
Verb
gamberger
- (slang) to think hard
- 1997, “Demain, c’est loin”, in L'École du micro d'argent, performed by IAM:
- La pauvreté, ça fait gamberger, en deux temps, trois mouvements / On coupe, on compresse, on découpe, on emballe, on vend
- Poverty really makes you think, and before you know it / You cut, you compress, you chop up, you wrap, you sell
Conjugation
This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written gamberge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
