From Arabic ⁧عَلَى شَأْنِ⁩ (ʕalā šaʔni, literally “on the issue of”) or a contraction of għaliex. Cognate with Egyptian Arabic ⁧عشان⁩, ⁧علشان⁩ (ʕašān, ʕalašān, “because”). Compare also Maltese biex.
