From Arabic عَلَى شَأْنِ (ʕalā šaʔni, literally “on the issue of”) or a contraction of għaliex. Cognate with Egyptian Arabic عشان, علشان (ʕašān, ʕalašān, “because”). Compare also Maltese biex.
