Etymology
From Arabic عَرُوس (ʿarūs, usually “bride”, but also “bridegroom”). Used the same way in city dialects of Tunisia. Possibly in part a backformation from the marked feminine għarusa, from Arabic عَرُوسة (ʕarūsa, “bride”). The commoner Arabic word for “bridegroom” is عَرِيس (ʕarīs).
