frikë
Albanian
Alternative forms
- firkë
- frîgë
Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *frikā, possibly from Ancient Greek φρίκη (phríkē, “shivering, shuddering”) but the semantic area is more uncommon for Ancient Greek loans in Albanian. Assumption of a loan from Byzantine Greek φρίκη (phríkē) seems implausible, because velar followed by front vowel would be palatalized. Otherwise from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pr̥k-éh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥k- yet this would be the only s-mobile of the root.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈfɾik(ə)/
Noun
frikë f (plural frika, definite frika, definite plural frikat)
