From Old Galician-Portuguese (att. as fugaça, 13th c.; also found in local Latin documents since the 11th c.), from Late Latin focācium (via its plural focācia), derived from Latin focus (“hearth”). Compare Portuguese fogaça, Spanish hogaza.
