From Old Norse fótspor, equivalent to fod + spor. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål fotspor, Norwegian Nynorsk fotspor, Swedish fotspår, Icelandic fótspor, Faroese fótaspor, Dutch voetspoor (whence also Afrikaans voetspoor), German Fußspur and Low German Footspoor.
