From Proto-Germanic *ferudi (“last year”), from Proto-Indo-European *peruti (“last year”, literally “on the other side of a year”). Related to obsolete German fert (“last year”). Cognates include Sanskrit परुत् (parut, “last year”), Persian پار (pâr, “last year”), Ancient Greek πέρυσι (pérusi, “last year”), Lithuanian pernai (“last year”), Old Armenian հերու (heru, “last year”) and Old English fyrn.
