förra
Swedish
Etymology
From Old Swedish fyrre, from Old Norse fyrri, from Proto-Germanic *furizô, comparative of Proto-Germanic *furi, *furai.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [²fœ̞rːa]
- (nonstandard, nonetheless common[1]) IPA(key): [²fɵrːa]
Adjective
förra (masculine förre)
Usage notes
- Just like English last, this adjective can only be used in attributive, definite form (det förra året = the last year), not in indefinite (ett förrt år = a last year) or predicative form (året var förrt = the year was last). For such cases, either use föregående (“preceding”) or forn (“old”), or rewrite to definite form (e.g. året var det förra = the year was the last one).
