Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *ed (thing, goods) + -lə, a denominal suffix.[1] Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (eyle),[2] Chagatai ایلمك, ایله‌مك (eylämäk), Karakhanid اَذْلَلْماكْ (äðlälmäk, to be corrected, fixed),[3] Turkish eylemek (to do, make). Unrelated to Turkish elemek (to sift) (< elge < el 'hand') and to the synonymous Azerbaijani etmək (to do) (< Proto-Turkic *ēt-).
