Etymology

From the stem es- of the verb būti (to be), cf. esu (I am) + the suffix -ybė (-ness; -ity).

An equivalent construction exists in Latvian, although with a different sense: esība (being, the fact of existing).

esýbė f (plural esýbės) stress pattern 1

  1. entity (something or somebody that exists as an individual unit)
  2. being, creature
