Borrowed from New Latin epiglōttis, from Ancient Greek ἐπῐγλωττῐ́ς (epiglōttís, “valve covering the larynx”), from ἐπῐ- (epi-, “upon, over”) + γλωττῐ́ς (glōttís, “glottis, mouth of the windpipe”); equivalent to epi- (“upon; above”) + glottis.
