emoji ZWJ sequence
English
Noun
emoji ZWJ sequence (plural emoji ZWJ sequences)
- (computing) A combination of emoji and control characters to display a particular emoji on supported operating systems.[1][2]
- 2016 November 14, Rob Reed, “Everything You Need To Know About Emoji”, in Smashing Magazine:
- When an emoji zwj[sic] sequence is sent to a system that does not have a corresponding single glyph, the ZWJ characters would be ignored and a fallback sequence of separate emoji would be displayed.
Usage notes
For instance, the transgender pride flag emoji (🏳️⚧) is formed by combining 🏳 (“U+1F3F3
; White Flag”) +
(“U+200D
; Zero Width Joiner”) + ⚧ (“U+26A7
; Male With Stroke And Male And Female Sign”). On systems that do not support the transgender flag emoji, this sequence will display as 🏳⚧.
