Borrowed from Latin elegīa, from Ancient Greek ἐλεγεία (ᾠδή) (elegeía (ōidḗ), literally “elegiac song”), from the feminine form of ἐλεγείος (elegeíos), from ἔλεγος (élegos, “mournful poem”).
