From Proto-Albanian *dzalā,[1] from earlier *dzalakta, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵlákt (gen. *ǵlaktós). Compare Old Armenian կաթն (katʻn), Ancient Greek γάλα (gála, milk), Hittite 𒂵𒆷𒀝𒋻 (galaktar, balm, resin), Latin lac (milk, milky juice), Waigali zōr (milk) and the irregular Romanian zară.[2]
