From Proto-Albanian *dzalā,[1] from earlier *dzalakta, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵlákt (gen. *ǵlaktós). Compare Old Armenian կաթն (katʻn), Ancient Greek γάλα (gála, “milk”), Hittite 𒂵𒆷𒀝𒋻 (galaktar, “balm, resin”), Latin lac (“milk, milky juice”), Waigali zōr (“milk”) and the irregular Romanian zară.[2]
