Etymology
From Proto-Philippine *dakəlaq (“big; great”). Compare Pangasinan dakila, Bikol Central dakula, Tagbanwa dakula', Mansaka dakora, Maranao dakola', Western Bukidnon Manobo dekela' and Tausug dakula'. According to Potet (2016), also possibly a metathesis of Old Malay *dalika, from Sanskrit माण्डलिक (māṇḍalika, “chieftain, governor”). See Malay mandalika.
