creier

Romanian

Alternative forms

  • creiel Banat, rare, archaic, regional

Etymology

Probably from Latin cerebrum, through a Vulgar Latin root *crebrum (which would have initially yielded *creur in Romanian before undergoing further changes; the -eie- may be due to a chip between two -r-'s, or unetymological; cf. also greier). Alternatively, possibly from the diminutive form cerebellum, through a root *crebellum (compare the rare and dated variant regional form creiel and Aromanian criel (also found in Megleno-Romanian), variant of crier).[1]
