corriger

French

Etymology

Borrowed from Latin corrigēre.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /kɔ.ʁi.ʒe/, /ko.ʁi.ʒe/
  • (file)

Verb

corriger

  1. to correct
    Quelqu’un doit corriger son erreur.
    Someone must correct her error.
  2. (school); to grade (US), to mark (UK)

Conjugation

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written corrige- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
