Etymology
Inherited from Vulgar Latin *colŏbra, altered from Classical Latin colubra, feminine counterpart to coluber (“snake”), of uncertain origin. Compare Occitan colòbra, French couleuvre, and Spanish culebra. Doublet of cobra, which was borrowed from Portuguese.
