Uncertain. Popularly accepted **xocolātl, through xocolia (“to make sour”) + ātl (“water”), literally “to make the water sour”, ultimately from xococ (“sour”) + ātl (“water”), the substitution of /tʃ/ for /ʃ/ not being uncommon.
