Middle Vietnamese form is chớp nháng (a flash of lightning). Attested in Chỉ nam ngọc âm giải nghĩa (指南玉音解義) "Thi Tiên chớp nháng vi quang". Also attested in the idiom ba chớp ba nháng ("something happened so fast that could not be seen clearly").
